Go Green Day 2018
Today we celebrated Go Green Day in Seaview!
In the morning, P.1 & 2 went with Glenarm Community Pre-School to look for squirrels and other wildlife in Glenarm Forest. We told the Pre-schoolers all about looking after the environment and we then had a delicious healthy snack prepared and supplied by the Pre-School. Thanks so much to Lynn, Michelle and Kerry.
When the P.3- 7 children came back from Confirmation practice they were also treated to a healthy break supplied and prepared by the PTA. Thanks to Kerry, Dympna and Shauna. Healthy Living is a very important area within the Eco-Schools ethos.
In the afternoon, we decided to celebrate Go Green Day by combining it with Outdoor Classroom Day. We tackled 3 water challenges on our Water Explorers adventure.
CLEAN THAT WATER UP!
- We talked about how many water supplies are dirty like lakes and rivers. So we investigated ways to clean water.
- We used funnels, coffee filters and nets to try to clean the filthy water.
GROW IT YOURSELF!
- We talked about how large commercial farms used lots of water to water crops and sometimes pesticides can enter the rivers and seas.
- We thought about using rainwater to water our school garden.
- With Jackie, we planted for seeds, bulbs and flowers to add to our school garden.
FASHIONABLE WATER
- As a class, we discussed how fabric contains secret water. The cotton used to produce the t shirt and how the fabric was produced all used precious water. It takes 2700 litres of water to make a cotton t shirt.
- Reusing and upcycling clothes is a great way to save water and to lessen the impact of water pollution on places near factories.
- We recycled a large piece of fabric to make a large scale mural for our school yard.
On top of this, some children used wooden blocks to make bridges, play dough to make water animals and painted the school fence!
