Activity Based Learning: Native American Indians

16th Oct 2018

Primary 3 and 4 have been learning about what happened to the Native American Indians. They completed work about their customs, ways of life and food, etc. Together we planned our activities so that the children felt involved in the learning process. We planned to work collaboratively on creating a Native American settlement. The children decided on the necessary resources and made decisions on which roles the each other had within the construction.

Evie, Grace and Olivia made paintings to decorate the tipis. Shay and Noah became hunters and fishermen- making fishing rods and a bow. Gerard and Ryan made the camp complete with a campfire. Michaela put up the tipi. Allister kept his himself very busy in our writing area making an Indian armband! And of course P.J was chief!

The children were given lots of time to reflect and evaluate the process.

Here is some of the fantastic language and communication I heard during:

  • 'I made a bridge from wood so we can cross the river.'- Shay
  • 'The Indians fished in the rivers- I caught a big salmon.' -Noah
  • 'I'm making a fishing rod.' - P.J
  • 'They would have cooked by fire.' - Shay
  • 'The Europeans brought horses to America.' -Evie
  • 'We should rub sticks to make fire.'- P.J
  • 'Indians worshipped the Great Spirit.' - Allister
